If you own quality Japanese bonsai tools — or are considering buying them — you’ll hear about camellia oil. It’s the traditional maintenance oil for high carbon steel tools, used by craftspeople in Japan for centuries. For bonsai practitioners, it’s a simple and important part of tool care. Understanding what it is and how to use it properly takes about two minutes, and it’s the difference between tools that last decades and tools that rust prematurely.
What Camellia Oil Is
Camellia oil is pressed from the seeds of the Camellia plant — the same genus as the ornamental camellia flowers common in gardens. In Japan, it has a long history of use for protecting metal tools and blades, conditioning wooden handles and surfaces, and in traditional hair and skin care. The oil pressed for tool use is sometimes called tsubaki oil (tsubaki being the Japanese word for camellia).
It’s a light, clear oil with very low viscosity. It doesn’t gum up or become sticky over time, which makes it ideal for tool blades — it protects without affecting cutting performance or leaving residue on plant material.
Why High Carbon Steel Needs It
Quality Japanese bonsai tools are made from high carbon steel, which is harder than stainless steel and holds a sharper edge longer. The trade-off is that high carbon steel is more prone to rust than stainless steel. Without regular oiling, high carbon steel blades will develop surface rust, particularly if stored in humid conditions or if sap residue is left on the blades after use.
Camellia oil forms a thin protective layer on the blade surface that displaces moisture and prevents oxidation. Applied after every session, it essentially eliminates rust as a concern for properly maintained tools.
How to Use It
The routine is simple:
- After each use, wipe the blades clean of sap, soil, and debris with a clean cloth
- Apply a few drops of camellia oil to a cloth and wipe it over the entire blade surface — cutting edges, flat faces, and the inside of the joint
- Store tools in a dry place
That’s it. The whole process takes under a minute per tool. If you work with multiple tools in a session, a quick wipe at the end before putting them away is all that’s needed.
The pivot joint also benefits from a drop of oil occasionally. It keeps the action smooth and prevents rust from developing in the joint where the two halves of a shear or cutter meet.
What Happens If You Don’t Oil
Tools that aren’t maintained with oil will develop surface rust within weeks in humid conditions. Light surface rust can be removed with fine steel wool or a rust eraser, followed by oiling. If rust is allowed to progress and pits the blade surface, it becomes much harder to restore the tool to proper cutting condition. The blades may no longer meet cleanly, which affects cutting performance and requires professional sharpening to correct.
The cost of a bottle of camellia oil is negligible compared to the value of quality Japanese tools. It’s one of the best investments you can make in protecting equipment you’ve already invested in.
Using Camellia Oil on Other Tools
Camellia oil is suitable for any high carbon steel cutting tool — not just bonsai tools. Grafting knives, saws, and any other carbon steel blades benefit from the same treatment. It can also be used to condition wooden handles, though this is a secondary use.
