Akadama

Description

Akadama is a naturally occurring Japanese clay granule and the gold standard substrate for bonsai. The manufacturing process — drying and baking — creates a granule that drains freely, holds adequate moisture, and maintains the slightly acidic pH that most bonsai species thrive in. Over time it breaks down gradually, improving water retention as the tree matures in the pot. This is Clay Best brand akadama: medium grain size (7mm–15mm), 14-liter bag (~3.7 gallons). Can be used on its own or blended with pumice and lava rock. Imported from Japan.
